Press Release

‘Icarus’ is the debut single to be released by Belfast based four-piece, No Oil Paintings. Taken from their forthcoming second release, ’Too Close to the Sun’. The single will be available on all download and streaming platforms from 09/06/17. Born in Belfast, No Oil Paintings is the musical synergy of Chris Kelly (lead vocals, guitar), twin brothers Sean (vocals, guitar, 5-string banjo) & James Doone (vocals, bass guitar), and George Sloan (vocals, drums). ‘Icarus’ is based around the question “Is it better to burn out, than to fade away?” The song is symbolic of Icarus who flew too close to the sun to his peril. This is a representation of our idols who have gone before us and lived an erratic lifestyle to the point of their demise. We venture into the conversation, is it better to live a short but wild, exotic lifestyle, or pass through gently without memory. With a variety of influences from rock to outlaw country, No Oil Paintings have grown together and developed the their own sound — raucous alternative guitar & banjo-driven folk, with an edge of darkness. The band strive to use typical folk instrumentation accompanied by strong four-part male harmonies, to create something a little more wild than the music often associated with the folk genre today. Fans of artists such as The Band, Townes Van Zandt, and Jason Isbell will love the sound of No Oil Paintings. “Think less Earl Scruggs and more Jack White” – Our Back Yard Festival “Animated and exciting, No Oil Paintings are very talented musicians who put on one hell of a show!” – Gigging NI
